No roads lead to pretty Wengen (the only traffic being the little electric trolleys carrying goods) ... the village is reached by a scenic mountain railway which winds its way up in around 14 minutes from Lauterbrunnen in the valley below.
Wengen holds a special place in our hearts and is the epitome of a charming and unspoilt Swiss village, lying on a sunny plateau with spectacular views to the high Alps. The village offers wooden chalets and relaxed atmosphere for your holiday. The backdrop of the Eiger and Jungfrau mountains along with the great choice of long established hotels, cosy stüblis and lively bars all make Wengen many skiers' idea of the perfect winter resort. Jungfrau ski region Some of the finest skiing in the Alps is spread out below the mighty Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains which tower 4,158m above the vast 211km ski area. To the east are the sunny slopes of 'Grindelwald First' whilst to the west is the superb 15km run from the 2,970m summit of the Schilthorn down to Lauterbrunnen.
Kleine Scheidegg- Männlichen This superb ski area is situated between Wengen and Grindelwald and is reached by frequent trains and cable cars. Ski runs fan out from Kleine Scheidegg in different directions, well suited to the beginner or intermediate skier, or you can take the chair lift up to the Lauberhorn at 2,472m where there are more challenging runs. At Fallboden there is a wonderful ski run below the north face of the Eiger. Take the lift up to Eigergletscher and try the 'Black Rock' run or the exhilarating piste that answers to the name of 'Oh God'! From Kleine Scheidegg you can also work your way across to the Männlichen (2,230m) with a series of long runs and various lifts, stopping en-route for a drink or a bratwurst at one of the snow bars. On the Männlichen, there are wide open slopes above the tree line and some steeper slopes with moguls.
The main Kleine Scheidegg restaurant is particularly good with a large sun terrace and spectacular views of the Jungfrau. The terrace of the restaurant up at Eigergletscher also affords stunning views and good food. Just above Scheidegg is the Berghaus Grindelwaldblick restaurant - take the Lauberhorn chair lift and then ski the piste that leads down to the restaurant. The Männlichen restaurant also features plenty of seating inside and out.
Grindelwald-First A series of interconnecting lifts and runs offer 50km of prepared pistes and there are three different 8km runs back down to Grindelwald. The First is also great for adventure: experience the 'First Flyer' zip wire or take a scenic walk along the amazing Cliff Walk by Tissot. You can eat here in the restaurant with a view of the north face of the Eiger.
